In
the early 1980's TUFP successfully lobbied for a change in the
traditional Labour movement approach to the Middle East swinging many
unions behind a more pro Palestinian position. This also had
major implications for Labour Party policy.
This was achieved by a variety of means:
Lobbying union branches, regions, executives and key officials
Producing
a range of campaign materials - Yousef Allen's publication "The
Palestine Post" was an important vehicle for news of what was happening
in the occupied territories Organising joint and individual union delegations to
and from the occupied territories
Sending joint union delegations to meet with Yasser Arafat and the Palestinian leadership
Organising special appeals to support individual projects run by the Palestinian Trade
Union movement and other bodies
By
the mid to late 1980s support for the Palestinian cause had moved from
the fringes to the mainstream of the British Labour Movement.
